Dutch International Tournament 31-8-13

Sep 6, 2013   //   by dafa   //   Season 2013  //  No Comments

After a last minute ground change, the teams from Amsterdam, Netherlands, Belgium and France arrived in blustery conditions…

Game 1 was the highly favoured Flying Dutchman against the visiting Belgium/France side, forgetting past differences and playing together as a single unit for the first time ever!

Combined French and Belgian squad

The favourites started well with Tom ‘don’t argue’ Paterakis commanding the centre of the ground and feeding the Dutch forwards with some fine opportunities but the Dutchies (Rens) couldn’t kick straight and it was the tourists who bagged the first goal through some classy work by Belgian rover Brendon storming down the wing and letting fellow compatriot finish off a great team play.

The dutchmen responded swiftly with the games oldest player Aaron ‘grizzly’ gray-block bombing long from 40-metres out. The rest of the half was a scrappy affair with Netherlands not being able to convert (Rens) their bagful of chances meanwhile the Frenchies/Belgians were using German efficiency with hand and feet to stay within 10 points at halftime.

The second half was another scrappy affair but the Dutchies finally started to pull away as they dominated in the ruck with slightly hungover Julz ‘bourbon’ Poole getting his one goal of the day for some tireless work in the middle.

The final score:

Flying Dutchmen 9.12.66

Belgium/France 6.2.38

Game 2 saw the Dutch side face up against a new look Amsterdam devils team, missing a few of their key contributors but sporting a fiery Damien ‘locks’ Trevenen at the helm. The Flying Dutchmen started strong with Aaron and Tom combining to put on some sweet champagne football. The devils responded with big man Karim bursting through the centre and feeding Trevenen for some scintillating quick fire goals. This fight back was short lived as Ren’s ‘chewy-boot’ Kattenberg finally found his kicking boots and started slotting the balls though the middle with some great support from partner in crime and star from previous video replays Bill ‘U-turn’ Johnstone.
A strong half time lead by the Dutchmen was increased in the second half with help from Nick ‘hardnut’ Bennet who managed to creep up from the back line and slot a major of his own. In a sour note for the Flying Dutchmen Steve ‘bull wine’ Dillon appeared to pull a hammy just 2 weeks ahead of the much anticipated Algarve campaign. Poor old Stevo …

Though notable mentions must go to first gamers – Alex and Chris. Great to see the lads put on the jumper and show some ominous signs for the future – Bring on Euro cup 2014!!!
The final score:

Flying Dutchmen 17.11.113

Amsterdam 5.1.31

With Netherlands through to the final

Game 3 saw the two defeated sides face each other in a do or die to see who would be joining them out of the Devils and the French/Belgians.
Despite having an intimidating midfield the visitors struck first with some fine work from the French contingent in the side (No. 42). Trevenen and Peter ‘rossitter’ Saurus rallied for a short fight back but there was no stopping the now rampant French/Belgium’s! Finishing with good momentum into the grand final.

Dale Podisadly and the elusive (No. 42) were unstoppable in the forward line, snapping goal after goal in some very Thiery Henry style Aussie Football. The gloved Frenchman in the centre was a tireless runner and Brendon ‘the nugget’ was commanding anything and everything at the centre bounce – the tourists didn’t travel all this way just for the red light district they were here to take back a trophy!!

The Final Score

Belgium/France 13.6.84

Amsterdam 6.8.44

Grand final
After a solid day of football the grand final was a tame affair with the Dutchmen bossing proceedings from the start, this time Jort ‘pommy’ Kolman and Maurice ‘captain Birdseye’ linked up through the middle with late arriver Darren ‘dazza’ Hain to put on a solid lead. Nicky chimed in with some hard running and silky skills to help the Dutchmen retain the DIT trophy for a 3rd year running.

Post match celebrations began shortly after where the Dutch team took part in the traditional drink from the Wooden Clog.

Player of the Tournament- Arron Grey-Block (Flying Dutchmen)

Best international – (No. 42 – France)

Golden Boot – Dale (French/Belgiums – 7 Goals)

Most points – Rens Kattenberg (Flying Dutchmen – 8 Behinds)

Thanks to everyone who got involved! Great day out!

Amsterdam Devils V Dutch All Stars 10-8-13 – Dutch Summer Cup

Aug 13, 2013   //   by dafa   //   Season 2013  //  No Comments

On the 10th of August 2013 players from all over the Netherlands joined to compete in the Dutch Summer Cup at the VVV ground in Amsterdam.

The All Stars came storming out of the blocks early to lead the game by 14 points at quarter time. Both teams put on 6 goals in the second, although the All Stars could have greatly extended their margin if it wasn’t for inaccurate kicking. The visitors ended the half having had 23 scoring shots compared to Amsterdam’s 12, only to be leading by 21 points.

After an inspired speech from Devils captain Damo at half time the home team responded kicking 7 goals to 2 in the third. Midfielders Tim D, Damo, Steve and Darren provided exquisite delivery to full forward Joe who finished with 4 for the term. With the Devils now leading by 7 points the stage was set for an epic final term.

The Devils started where they left off kicking the first goal, although the All Stars weren’t about to give up. Big man Karim continued his domination in the ruck giving his midfielders first dip at the footy allowing them to bring the forwards back into the game. Forward pocket Bill dominated with 5 goals for the quarter whilst first gamer Frank kicked his first ever goal to put the visitors ahead with just minutes to play. With the game in the balance, the ball was cleared out onto the wing where respective captains and long time arch rivals Jules and Damo ferociously attacked the pill. In a game winning play Damo won the footy delivering it forward allowing the Devils to kick the winning goal.

Versatile All Stars’s ruckman Karim picked up 3 votes to win the prestigious Head and Shoulders Man of the Match award whilst Devils captain Damo and sleek Devils midfielder Tim D finished with 2 and 1 vote respectively.

All Stars captain Jules was extremely unlucky not to pick up any votes as he provided unmatched run through the middle and finished with a lazy 7 goals. Devils full forward Joe was also unlucky to miss out with his 12 goals going relatively unnoticed by the voting panel.

The game was followed with the presentation of the Dutch Summer Cup, a BBQ and of course a few cold ones.

Amsterdam Devils V Den Haag Ooievaars 27-7-13

Aug 8, 2013   //   by dafa   //   Season 2013  //  No Comments

In a lead up to the Dutch Summer Cup, Amsterdam hosted Den Haag on July 27.

After a tight first quarter the hosts kicked 8 goals to 3 in the second to hold a commanding 49 point lead at half time. The visitors returned from the break with a new found intensity and managed to win the second half 7.6 (48) 6.4 (40).

Goliath Dutch forward Rens once again displayed his strength and skill in front of the big sticks booting 6 for the visitors, while crafty small forward Bill managed 5 for the home team.

Jort gathers across half back

In a best on ground performance young Dutchman Jort displayed ferocious run through the midfield capitalising on his ability to play both tall and small. The blonde bison also spent time up forward and snagged 3 goals of his own.

Aussie ball magnet and all round nice guy Jules unsuspectingly slipped into an Ooievaars jersey at half time to give the visitors some extra spark for the remainder of the game. After already slotting 3 majors for the Devils in the first half the former Outback News Reporter kicked 3 in the last quarter to finish with 6.

The Amsterdam Devils will be back out there this Saturday taking on the Dutch All Stars in a battle for the prestigious Dutch Summer Cup.

Amsterdam intra-club match

Jun 27, 2013   //   by dafa   //   Season 2013  //  No Comments

Amsterdam held an intra-club match on Wednesday, June 15, with just a few days recovery following the Dutch v Amsterdam match the previous weekend.

Under some long-awaited Dutch summer sun, the Amsterdam Red team recovered from a slow start to defeat the Amsterdam White team by 28 points. Dutch national squad member Rens kicked eight goals.

Still, the victors were forced to do post match push-ups due to a bet between the opposing expat full-forwards as to who would individually kick the most goals. Fortunately, the beer was cold afterwards – for everyone!

Dutch squad starts Euro Cup build-up

Jun 27, 2013   //   by dafa   //   Season 2013  //  No Comments

The Dutch national squad took on a combined Amsterdam team on Saturday June 15 in their first official build-up match ahead of the Euro Cup tournament to be played in September in France.

First gamer and Man on the Match - Michael van der Lugt

The day started out with a skills session, followed by a general meeting of DAFA numbers out in the middle of the VVV pitch. Great to see a solid mix of former and new players available to pull on the Dutch national orange and blue jumper, so it was decided to play a Dutch v combined Amsterdam match!

After an even first quarter, the expats playing for Amsterdam scooted out to a good lead in the second quarter to go into the second half with their tails up, leading 6 goals 8 points (38) to 1 goal 3 points (9).

The third quarter was again well balanced, but the Dutch squad, though looking better and slickly combing through the middle of the ground were unable to bridge the gap, heading into the fourth quarter down by 48 points.

The situation turned around in the fourth quarter as Amsterdam were put under pressure and as the Dutch squad hammered through several quick goals to give themselves a chance to run over the top of the Devils.

Amsterdam withstood the challenge though, eventually winning 12 goals 16 points (88) to 8 goals 7 points (55).

The BBQ food and drinks in the afternoon sun were a good way to finish the day.
